Practice Areas

The following are our main practice areas.  Contact us about these and others.  We handle some matters not listed here.

Sexual harassment

  • Workplace – workplace sexual harassment is our largest concentration.  We litigate these cases under federal and state statutes.  We have at times found some little-known alternative ways to get these cases to court for those who can not use the main statutes.
  • Colleges and schools – these cases are often harder and the clients more vulnerable and scared than employment cases.  We work with the clients to find the best remedy.

Gender discrimination

  • Workplace – we handle the old-fashioned sort of gender discrimination where employers knowingly treat one sex (usually female) less favorably in hiring, firing, promotion or other aspects of the job.  We also handle the more indirect forms such as pregnancy discrimination and the “glass ceiling” that keeps women from advancing to the top levels in some workplaces.
  • Education – even in these modern times, some areas of study maintain hidden mechanisms to exclude or disfavor members of one sex.
  • Customers – We can often help where business or government treats one sex worse than the other in access, pricing, granting of credit, or other consumer or citizen rights.

Wage & Hour

We enforce the rights of employees (under both federal and state law) to be paid at least the minimum wage required by law, to be paid a higher rate for overtime when the law so requires, and to be paid for all hours worked at the agreed rate.

Whistleblower

  • Public employees – we use the Florida Public Whistleblower Act, the federal and state constitutions, and other laws to assist public employees who suffer retaliation for opposing illegal or wasteful conduct by public officials.  These protections often extend to employees of profit or non-profit corporations with government contracts.
  • Private employees – private employees in Florida who oppose illegal employer conduct, or who report it or who assist in investigations of it, have protections under the law.  We help enforce these rights.
  • Sarbanes-Oxley and other federal statutes – in the wake of scandals such as those at Enron and WorldCom, Congress passed new laws to encourage corporate employees to come forward to report fraud in the workplace.  These new laws are complex and uncertain. We help untangle them.

Free Speech

Freedom of speech is essential to the functioning of a free society.  We seek to protect this fundamental right for citizens, employees, students, consumers, tenants and all others.

Rape Victims

Victims of rape need support, understanding, and sensitivity when they find the courage to seek redress against perpetrators and the employers or landlords whose negligence created an unacceptable risk.  We help them understand and enforce their rights.
